Auckland to the thermal wonderland of Rotorua, down to beautiful Lake Taupo and
then into the mountainous Tongariro National Park for some amazing hiking adventures..
DAY 1: Auckland -
Waitomo - Rotorua
The Bombay Hills signal the end of sprawling
city, and the lush Waikato pasturelands take you past Hamilton and on to the WaitomoCaves
for a subterranean boat ride under an eerie canopy of lights. On across the Mamaku
Hills to fiery Rotorua. We recommend you attend a fascinating Maori hangi (feast)
and concert tonight (optional). Overnight in Rotorua
DAY 2: Rotorua - Lake
Taupo
A half day sightseeing tour is included. You will see roaring
geysers, boiling mud pools at the thermal area, tame trout at the springs and performing
sheep and dogs at the Agrodome. This afternoon drive south through exotic forests
until you reach the steam fields of Wairakei and Lake Taupo in the centre of the
North Island. Overnight at Lake Taupo
DAY 3:
Taupo - Tongariro National Park
This morning a guided tour will take you to the
mighty Huka Falls, Wairakei, the Aratiatia Rapids and the Craters of the Moon. In
the afternoon you skirt the lake and climb the slopes of Mt Ruapehu, an active volcano.
Overnight at Mt Ruapehu.
Day 4:
Tongariro National Park - Auckland or Wellington
The morning is free to explore one of the many short
walks available. The park headquarters will advise on routes. In the afternoon board
the Overlander train to journey to either Auckland or Wellington (advise when booking),
arriving in the evening.
